Mental health is an essential part of human well-being, yet psychiatric illnesses continue to be surrounded by misunderstanding, stigma, and barriers to seeking treatment. At the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences, Mufti Mehmood Memorial Teaching Hospital, our aim is to create an environment in which every individual seeking help for a mental health problem is treated with dignity, compassion, respect, and confidentiality. We believe that psychiatric care extends beyond the prescription of medication. Effective treatment requires understanding the individual, their family, social circumstances, psychological needs, and strengths. Accordingly, we emphasize comprehensive assessment, evidence-based treatment, psycho-social interventions, family involvement, rehabilitation, and continuity of care. As an academic department, we are equally committed to teaching, training, research, and professional development. We seek to develop competent and compassionate healthcare professionals who can recognize mental health problems early, provide appropriate treatment, and contribute positively to the mental health of our community. Our vision is to contribute toward a future in which mental healthcare is accessible, scientifically grounded, culturally sensitive, and free from unnecessary stigma.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at Mufti Mehmood Memorial Teaching Hospital, Dera Ismail Khan, is committed to providing comprehensive, ethical, compassionate, and evidence-based mental healthcare to individuals and families in Dera Ismail Khan and the surrounding districts.
The department is a 20-bed inpatient unit, with 10 beds allocated for male patients and 10 for female patients. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) services are provided three times a week for both admitted patients and day-care patients.
A separate Department of Behavioural Sciences has also been established at Gomal Medical College, offering counselling services to students and faculty members and assisting them in managing stress and other psychological challenges.
The department also provides psychiatric services to inmates at Dera Ismail Khan Jail through weekly clinical visits.
As a constituent department of a teaching hospital, we have a dual responsibility: to provide high-quality clinical care and to educate and train the next generation of healthcare professionals. The department provides opportunities for undergraduate medical education, postgraduate clinical training, continuing professional development, and research in psychiatry and behavioural sciences.
